Barbara Bruner, Chair
I was raised and educated in Port Alberni. My husband and I moved to Port Hardy with our three young children in 1967.
We brought up our children here, two girls, one boy. During those years we were involved with their activities. We also were fortunate to have four of our grandchildren here during their growing up.
We are now busy helping with great grandchildren, which gives us some insight in the issues affecting young families here, while at the same time, considering our ages, we are also connected with issues concerning our older population.
I worked for the Vancouver Island Regional Library for 28 years, and although I am now retired, still get called to fill in occasionally, which I enjoy.
My husband I are both involved with community affairs and activities, and do volunteer work. As well as my position as Chair of the NICCCS Board, I am a director on the North Island Concert Society Board and the second vice president for the Port Hardy Hospital Society, and we are both members of the Hardy Bay Seniors Association.
We enjoy living in Port Hardy and being able to take part in these organizations, and the facilities our community offers.

Upon my arrival in the North Island in January 1976, I was employed by School District #85, Vancouver Island North. I have taught Kindergarten to Grade 7. At this present time I teach a multi-graded Kindergarten to Grade Two class at Fort Rupert Elementary School.
In 1992, I took a two year leave from the School District to administer an expatriate school in northern Chile. The children were from Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and the United States.
Professionally, I have been on a variety of committees. For many years I have sat on the district professional development committee. I have participated in several accreditations and hosted workshops in my subject area.
Locally, I have been a member of the District of Port Hardy’s Parks and Recreation Commission, and Canadian Cancer Society.
I have been a Director of the NICCCS since 1998.

I moved to Port Hardy in the early 70’s. I had small children and worked in the restaurant business and at Seafoods, part-time during those early years. I then worked at the mine for 13 years, during which time I became a volunteer on the crisis line. I was schooling part-time while working for the mine, and then returned as a summer student to the mine while going to school full-time. I volunteered for 10 years. I resigned from the crisis line when I started work at the Provincial Government as a caseworker for the income assistance department, which was formerly known as Social Services. I became the income assistance District Supervisor/Family Maintenance Worker for six years, before becoming the Government Agent for six years. In March 2009 I retired from the Government after 15 years.
I sit on the board of the St. Columba Anglican/United Church as the People's Warden. I volunteer at the Salvation Army on a casual basis. I am married, have two children and six grandchildren, two of whom are graduating from High School this year.

I have been a Port Hardy resident for 47 years. I graduated from NISS in 1977 and raised my children here. I am a Service Advisor with Dave Landon Motors, and have worked here for almost 40 years.
I am a strong believer in getting involved in our community. My volunteer work includes:
Auxiliary Police Officer for 15 years
President of the Port Hardy Slow Pitch Association for 10 years
Filomi Days Chairman for 2 years
Youth Baseball Coach
As the father of three girls (young women now) I am very aware of the importance of providing services and supports to families throughout our area.
I bring to the Board a good sense of humour, and a commitment to helping the NICCCS be the best it can be

Last year I was invited to become a member of the NICCCS Board. I have now lived in Port Hardy for 20 years and have worked in the field of Community Corrections for the past 30 years. My wife and I have raised our children here.
I have had a long association with NICCCS over the years and have referred many clients. I have a history of community involvement in Port Hardy and the other small communities I have lived.
Some of my volunteer and committee experience over the past years here on the North Island has included: the North Island Sex Offender Advisory Group, Port Hardy Restorative Justice Society, Port Hardy Recreation Facility Committee , Scouts Canada 1st Port Hardy Group Committee, North Island Kinsmen , North Island District Management Team (Community Corrections), North Island Child and Youth Committee, and the Provincial Policy Advisory Committee (Youth focus).
As a member of the Board, I enjoy participating with the other Board members and like everyone, am struggling to keep afloat with the accreditation process we are all going through.
